What’s in the formulation? Quite a lot actually. I used to say: I think I am going to start my own small coaching and training business, because I think I can help people develop. And especially in the Dutch culture (and maybe also in other cultures) people tended to respond like this: “wat leuk, je begint je eigen bedrijfje” (roughly translated as: that is so cute, starting your own small business). By adding the “small” (or in Dutch the ”je” behind the word) you often do not realize what you are destroying: you trivialize the importance of what you are saying! I know I said it, and people around me as well.
Until… I started to change my formulation. I left out the “I think”, because I sounded less secure of my plans than I was and I started to view my company in the right proportion: I believe it is a courageous step to set up your own business. Therefore I changed my formulation and said:
“I will start my Coaching & Training company, I am the managing director of Rosavicus Coaching & Training. I can guide people to grow to their highest potential.”
The response was that people changed their formulation as well and thought it was brave what I was doing. But changing the formulation takes quite a bit of confidence, especially if you are still insecure of your plans. A small inner voice might say: is it true that I can guide people to grow to their highest potential? The answer is a definite YES, IT IS! I compare it to a plant, it starts with a bud, but it will definitely become a flower; it expects to flourish.
So, if you believe you can change jobs, even though you have a permanent position now, it is possible! If you believe you can handle a new position, or can inspire a team to become more effective, or can deal with challenging teams or managers it is possible! Research showed many times that positive expectancies account for part of the success of plans. It is part of the success, because sometimes you could use some guidance, like a plant needs the sun and water. This guidance can be in the form of coaching or training, to build up the confidence or develop the necessary skills. This is where my expertise lies.
